Meet Dr. Ying Zheng

Bio

Prof. Zheng is a full professor and a Canada Research Chair with the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at Western University. Prior to joining Western, she was the Chair of Chemical Reaction Engineering at the University of Edinburgh, UK.

Prof. Zheng is primarily interested in the field of Applied Catalysis for energy innovations. Her current research activities include CO2 capture and utilization, converting CO2 to chemicals, hydrogen production from waste, nitrogen fixation, bitumen and biofuel upgrading, and novel reactor design. She has developed several patented technologies that have been licensed or have licensing potentials.

Prof. Zheng has also received several highly prestigious awards. The three awards that are most important to her are the 2018 Applied Catalysis Award presented by the Royal Society of Chemistry for “creativity and excellence in novel approaches or use of catalysis in industry”, the 2018 Design and Industrial Practice Award given by Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering for "innovative design or production activities accomplished in Canada", and the Syncrude Canada Innovation Award in 2010 for "a distinguished contribution in the field of chemical engineering while working in Canada before the age of 40". Prof. Zheng was also named one of the 20 inspiring and innovative women engineers in Canada in the Women of Innovation: The Influence of Leading Canadian Female Engineers.

Prof. Zheng actively contributes to the Chemical Engineering Community, serving as the Chair of the Catalysis Division of the Chemical Institute of Canada between 2018 and 2020. She has organized various national and international conferences, served as a member of the journal editorial boards and grant selection committees, as well as editors and guest editors of various scientific journals.
